BIOLOGY - THE LOST NOTES

is a collection of biological tidbits that I sprinkled through my college classes to inspire students to appreciate the natural world.  these are not for kiddos

REDHORSE SUCKERS ARE SHOALING

REDHORSE SUCKERS ARE SHOALING

You might be a redneck if you understood the title of the tidbit.  The redhorse is a variety of sucker.  A sucker is a type of fish (Moxostoma) that feeds on mussels, crawfish, and aquatic insects using it’s large, down-turned mouth.  The mouth is used to “suck up” foods which explains the common name “sucker”.  It looks a lot like those pictures of women who plumped up their lips to much.  “Shoaling” occurs when fish of the same species stay together for defense against predators, improved food finding, or mating.  Whether or not you understood the title of this tidbit, you should know that suckers are yummy (still talking about the fish here).  If you get invited to a sucker fry, just say “Yes”!
